Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
